Lise Lemeland is a painter, working in gouache and oils.  She received her BA from Stanford University, her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, and her MFA from Hunter College.  Awarded a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant in 2007, Lise’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.

Pattern and decoration are ongoing themes in Lise’s work, and she celebrates beauty and intricacy. Lise is also an aerobatic pilot, and flying is a great source of inspiration for her artwork. She has been awarded grants and scholarships for flight filming and aerobatic training. In May 2010, the Smithsonian Institution, National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC acquired three of her paintings for their permanent collection, which have been included in many exhibitions at NASM since.

Also a registered nurse, Lemeland has studied the human physiology and the physiological effects of G-forces on the body. Lemeland’s oil paintings address the experience of aerobatic flight, conveying the physiological and visual experiences of flying aerobatics.

Her works on paper depict the abundance and repetition in nature, focusing on the more meditative aspects of the natural world.

The mandala series are an exploration into the healing arts, Jungian psychology and meditation, and like the aviation commissions, are very personal and symbolic to the client. They are a true collaboration between the artist and the client, and Lise is focusing more of her efforts in these works.
